Greek Shipping Summit 2008
Starting off with a welcome party with a twist, going through some seriously topical subjects and winding up with an artfully argued debate, the 2007 Greek Shipping Summit had something for everyone.
Fortune smiled as a student demonstration in downtown Athens ended before the pre-conference reception, which in no way resembled the button-down affairs that usually precede such events.
Kindly hosted by Top Tannkers, delegates were treated to retro music, red shaded lights and a bustling bar, setting a casual background for both business talk and fun.
The summit itself took in some heavy-duty opinions on highly topical industry themes such as emissions, manning and crewing, newbuildings and the orderbook status, as well as the pressure owners are currently facing.
Girding their loins for battle, three debaters in favour of and three against the motion that "shipping has become a casino" lined up in the afternoon session. Some subtle digs from either side did not apparently do permanent harm to relations between the debaters, who were later spotted chatting good-humouredly.
Not entirely unexpectedly, the house overwhelmingly voted against the motion. After all, it would have been tough for the shipping community to admit that they are not actually doing business but just gambling.
The Greek Shipping Summit unites Greek and international shipowners with charterers, bankers and financiers, lawyers and lawmakers, regulators, port authorities, shipbuilders and representatives of class societies from all major world maritime centres.
