Shipping China 2010

‘China is the future. All shipping segments are dependent on China, absolutely all of them, either directly or indirectly.’ Morits Skaugen, CEO, I.M. Skaugen.

China is the greatest economic growth zone in history and is already the third largest economy in the world accounting for 7.5% of the world's total economic activity. This year China is expected to pass Japan as the world's second largest economy in the world and in 2020 China is projected to pass USA as the largest economy in the world.

China’s current ranking as the world’s second largest oil importer is buying 5m barrels every day equivalent to the combined production of Kuwait and Venezuela. And now it is the turn of coal. Last year China became a net importer of coal and will need to continue buying significant amounts of coking and thermal coal. Traded volumes on the seaborne coal market are set to reach 1bn tones a year in 5 years, signaling profitable times for both miners and shipowners. Against this backdrop, the fragility of supply chains is highlighted by the lack of investment in the world’s largest coal ports leading to bottlenecks and delays with some vessels waiting weeks before loading.
