Family roots of Dr. Zeller lead to the German shores of the North Sea, where he was born in November 1950. After High School he went to sea with the German merchant marine, sailing with various German shipowners and on all types of vessels, and working up his way from deckhand to captain. He obtained a full foreign going masters certificate and graduated with honours from the Hamburg Nautical Academy in 1974.
With certain interruptions for further experience at sea he then undertook law studies at Hamburg University, which he left in 1978 with a full law degree. After further legal training and experience he passed the bar examination in 1982, working in 1982/1983 as a maritime lawyer in Hamburg. Capt. Zeller also holds a regular doctor-of-law-degree from Hamburg University; his doctorate thesis dealt with German and International Insurance Law and in particular the Collision Liability under Hull and P&I insurance.
Dr. Zeller afterwards worked from 1983 to 1996 in the Marine and Transport Insurance Division of Munich Re, the world’s largest reinsurance company, where over the years he obtained the position of a full Company Director.
On 1st of January 1997 he left Munich Re in good mutual understanding to form his own network company “Zeller Associates”, an independent group of marine, transport and other specialty insurance service providers. The Group’s headquarters are located in Hamburg where the management of P&I and Defence facilities is a major part of work.
